Ikkanbari

Ikkanbari is a traditional Japanese folk craft. In ancient times, ikkanbari techniques were used to repair worn-out bamboo baskets so they could be used over a long lifespan. In modern times, ikkanbari is a way to create beautiful and functional pieces, such as bags, baskets, and trays.

My collection is carefully handcrafted from baskets of woven bamboo fibers onto which handmade Japanese paper (washi) is layered. Some bags are then decorated with traditional Japanese calligraphy (shodo). Others feature vintage silk kimono, or pages from antique books and woodblock prints produced between the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Persimmon tannin is applied to the bags for a durable, water-resistant finish. The tannin adds a gorgeous, hazelnut colour to the paper and creates an antique-look. When I want to preserve the original colour of the paper, I’ll apply a protective coat of clear, matte varnish instead of persimmon tannin.

Each ikkanbari piece is a unique custom-made item, only one of which has been produced.
